Fin Mermaid Stockings blog post

Instructions:
Fold a 8.5″ x 11″ paper in half and sketch a fin stencil. When you are happy with the shape, cut it out and trace it on a sheet of craft foam. Cut out the fin and paint it with glitter puffy paint (gold, silver, or crystal). Allow the brush stokes to show making lines like a mermaid fin. After it dries, use puffy paint to outline the fin and paint 7 lines within. If you make any mistakes, go back with a small triangle shaped piece of craft foam to smooth out the lines or slide off extra paint.

Tail Mermaid Stockings blog post

For the tail, you can use metallic velvet fabric, sequin fabric, or any kind you like. Fold an 8.5″ x 11″ paper in half, sketch a tail shape, and cut it out.

The tail stencil will be the actual size of the tail after gluing the edges, so when you cut out the fabric, leave a 1 inch seam allowance. You can mark where to cut and where to glue with a chalk pencil if you like.  If your fabric isn’t very sturdy, you’ll want to use iron-on interfacing. Use the tail stencil to cut out a piece of interfacing the same size as the stencil or a tiny bit smaller–it doesn’t have to be exact. Iron-on the interfacing to the back side of one piece of the tail fabric according to the instructions that come with the interfacing. With the right side of the tail fabric face-up, use Aleene’s Fabric Fusion to glue along the sides of the tail about an inch from the edges. Place the second piece of tail fabric on top with the right-sides of the fabric facing each other. Wait 2-4 hours until dry.

Turn the tail right-side out. Insert some glue into the bottom edge, and fold it inward. Use Aleene’s Super Fabric Adhesive to glue the fin inside the bottom of the tail.

Cut an 8 in. piece of ribbon and glue it to the top of the tail as a hook. Cut out a 18 in x 7.5 in. piece of faux fur fabric. Fold it in to thirds and glue in place. Glue the faux fur to the top of the stocking. Flip the stocking over to glue the fur all around. Place a scrap piece of paper inside the stocking to ensure that the glue wont seep through to the other side. Let dry for 2-4 hours.
